What is the purpose of oxygen therapy?

Oxygen is a gas essential for humanlife. It is one of the gases in the air that we breathe.

Oxygen therapy (both for temporary and long-term treatment) is recommended for the following conditions:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease;
  • Pulmonary fibrosis;
  • Pneumonia;
  • Acute asthma attack;
  • Cystic fibrosis;
  • Sleep apnea.

In itself, oxygen therapy is a common auxiliary method in clinics, but it is also used for home treatment. Modern medicine has introduced several devices that are designed for home treatment and provide the patient with oxygen through a face mask or nasal cannula.

Oxygen treatment may become necessary if the following symptoms occur:

  • Headache;
  • Shortness of breath;
  • Rapid breathing;
  • Shortness of breath;
  • Bluish discoloration of the lips, skin, and nails;
  • Dizziness and loss of consciousness;
  • General weakness, exhaustion.
