Painful respiration - pain and discomfort when inhaling or exhaling

What is respiration?

Painful respiration is lung pain that occurs when inhaling or exhaling.

It is worth noting that the lungs do not have pain receptors, therefore, the discomfort experienced when breathing is not necessarily directly related to this organ (lung). In fact, the cause of the symptom is conditions that affect the lungs, joints, heart muscles.

Call emergency medical help if the pain is accompanied by the following symptoms:

  • Choking;
  • Loss of consciousness;
  • Chest pain or a feeling of squeezing;
  • Acute shortness of breath;
  • Blue skin, fingers or nails;
  • Excessive sweating;
  • Sudden dizziness;
  • Feeling of shortness of breath.

The cause of painful breathing may be:

  • Pneumonia;
  • Pleurisy;
  • Costochondritis;
  • Pneumothorax;
  • Pericarditis;
  • Chest injury.
