If you get hit in the throat

If you get hit in the throat

Throat trauma and symptoms to watch out for.

A throat injury can damage many internal structures, including blood vessels, the spinal cord, and the windpipe.

Doctors call this type of injury a blunt trauma - a diagnosis that means that the body was hit, but the integrity of the skin was not broken, that is, there is no open wound.

Symptoms appear depending on which area of the throat was injured. Common complaints include:

• Discomfort;
• Pain when swallowing;
• Hoarse voice;
• Difficulty speaking;
• Wheezing-like noise;
• Bruises;
• Coughing;
• Coughing up blood.

Be sure to consult a doctor, even if the symptoms seem insignificant, because an injury to this area can cause the progression of a serious illness.

You should call emergency medical help if you have any of the following symptoms of a throat injury:

• Difficulty breathing;
• Sore throat;
• Back pain;
• Weakness or numbness;
• Difficulty walking or moving a limb;
• Noticeable swelling or pain;
• Wheezing.
