What is streptococcal pharyngitis?
This is an infection of the throat and tonsils caused by bacteria of the group Streptococcus. The infection causes acute inflammation and sore throat.
Appropriate antibiotics are prescribed for treatment. Streptococcal pharyngitis rarely causes serious diseases such as rheumatic fever. With proper treatment, the infection is cured within 7 to 10 days.
Streptococcal pharyngitis is especially common in school-age children (students aged 5 to 15). The disease itself is easily transmitted to siblings, parents, teachers and those who have direct contact with the infected child.
The earliest symptom of streptococcal infection is a sore throat that begins suddenly. You may also suddenly develop a fever - a high temperature is expected on the second day of infection.
Other symptoms include:
- Chills;
- Headache;
- Fatigue;
- Abdominal pain;
- Nausea and vomiting.
The only symptom that is not characteristic of this type of infection is a cough. If you have a cough and other symptoms characteristic of a cold, then your diagnosis is a viral infection, not streptococcal.
Streptococcal pharyngitis is very contagious. It is worth noting that some people do not show symptoms or do not look like they are infected - despite this, the patient is contagious.
The route of transmission of the infection is respiratory droplets and direct contact.
