Stupor - When a person is unconscious

What is stupor?

Stupor is a serious mental state in which a person does not respond to normal conversation and only responds to physical stimulation. It differs from a coma in that a person in a coma does not wake up due to external stimuli, while a person in a stupor responds to pain or other types of stimulation.

Stupor causes both mental and physical symptoms, for example, the following signs are quite expected to appear:

• Breathing too slowly or rapidly;
• Muscle spasms in an abnormal way;
• The pupils are wider or narrower than normal;
• The pupils do not react to light.

Possible causes include:

• Alcohol intoxication;
• Brain aneurysm;
• Brain tumor;
• Poisoning with nitrous oxide;
• Cardiac arrest;
• Dementia;
• Delirium;
• Encephalitis;
• Head trauma;
• Hyperglycemia;
• Hyponatremia;
• Kidney failure;
• Liver failure;
• Meningitis;
• Seizure;
• Sepsis;
• Stroke, etc.

Stupor is always considered an emergency, therefore, the patient should be immediately admitted to the emergency department of the clinic - it is necessary to promptly determine the cause and prescribe a course of treatment.
