Pain when yawning

Pain when yawning

Causes

Pain that you feel when swallowing usually develops due to a throat infection or injury.

Inflammatory processes in the tissues of the throat often cause pain when yawning.

In a large percentage of clinical cases, the cause of pain when yawning is a cold, flu, and sometimes a more serious illness, such as laryngeal cancer or epiglottitis.

The discomfort that accompanies a dry throat is a kind of feeling of a lump when swallowing, talking, or yawning.

Other causes may include:

• Streptococcal pharyngitis;
• Mononucleosis;
• Tonsillitis;
• Oral thrush;
• Esophagitis;
• Retropharyngeal abscess.

In the vast majority of cases, sore throats can be treated at home.

However, you should see a doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

• Swollen tonsils on one side;
• High fever;
• Swollen glands;
• Difficulty breathing;
• Severe pain;
• Pain that has been going on for several days.
