Runner's Stomach

Runner's Stomach

Stomach pain during running.

In this article, we will talk about stomach problems that occur directly during running or after completing this type of physical activity.

Statistically, runners are at a much higher risk of developing stomach pain during exercise than other athletes.

The exact cause is unknown, although lifestyle, dehydration, reduced blood supply, or diet may be contributing factors.

Basically, they complain of the following symptoms:

  • Diarrhea while running;
  • Abdominal pain and spasms;
  • Cramping in the side.

Since scientists do not know the exact cause of this phenomenon, it is difficult to talk about preventive measures, although, as doctors say, general healthy recommendations may be effective.

Namely:

  • Drink fluids;
  • Do not eat heavy meals before running;
  • Do not eat easily digestible foods (fiber, protein, etc.) before running.
  • Be sure to see a doctor if you have the following symptoms:
  • Stomach pain, bloating, or diarrhea that doesn't get better;
  • Bloody diarrhea;
  • Vomiting with signs of dehydration;
  • Severe stomach pain accompanied by fever.
