Transient ischemic attack - a warning sign before a stroke

What is a transient ischemic attack?

A transient ischemic attack occurs when the physiological process of blood circulation to the brain is disrupted. The pathology is characterized by the same signs as those observed during a stroke.

A transient ischemic attack lasts for several minutes and does not cause long-term damage. However, it can be considered a warning sign, a kind of warning sign, because if we look at the statistics, we find that one in three people who have a transient ischemic attack will develop a stroke, and half of them will have a stroke within a year. That is why doctors also call a transient ischemic attack a mini-stroke.

In fact, a transient ischemic attack is both an indication of an impending stroke and a chance for the patient to avoid a stroke (the doctor will be able to prescribe a course of stroke prevention, prophylactic medication).

A transient ischemic attack lasts for a few minutes, and most symptoms disappear within an hour. In rare clinical cases, symptoms persist for 24 hours.

Symptoms develop suddenly and include:

  • Weakness, numbness, or paralysis in the face or limbs, usually on one side of the body;
  • Slurred speech;
  • Blurred vision or loss of vision in one or both eyes;
  • Dizziness;
  • Loss of balance or coordination.

All the recommendations that are generally necessary to avoid other pathologies are provided for the prevention of transient ischemic attacks - a healthy lifestyle and regular physical examination are effective (monitoring even when a person is practically healthy, that is, nothing bothers him).
