It is quite possible that you have an abdominal fat due to stress

What is a cortisol belly fat?

We are talking about the accumulated fat in the abdominal area, which is formed against the background of high cortisol levels.

Cortisol is a stress hormone - it helps the body cope with stress, reduces inflammation, regulates blood pressure, blood sugar and metabolism.

However, stress, steroid use, and cancer can increase cortisol levels. Sometimes, with excessive cortisol, a person eats much more, therefore, the increased appetite is reflected in the weight and especially in the abdominal area.

The following symptoms occur with excess cortisol:

  • Weight gain (mainly in the face and abdomen);
  • Wide purple stretch marks on the stomach, chest, hips, under the arms;
  • Tendency to bruises;
  • High pressure;
  • High blood sugar level;
  • Strong fatigue;
  • Muscle weakness.

Glucose is stimulated during excess cortisol. A large amount of glucose usually turns into fat and accumulates in the body. When cortisol levels are chronically elevated, the risk of obesity increases.

Remember, with too much adrenaline, fat cannot be broken down properly.

Cortisol level increases in the following conditions:

  • Stress;
  • Pregnancy;
  • Intensive training;
  • Serious illness in the anamnesis;
  • Hot and cold temperature;
  • Decreased function of the thyroid gland;
  • Obesity;
  • Some medications.
