Abdominal swelling

Abdominal swelling

What does abdominal swelling mean?

Diagnosis Abdominal bloat describes a condition where your stomach area is larger than normal in size. You may complain of discomfort and pain during abdominal swelling.

Gases are the cause in a large percentage of clinical cases. The formation of excessive gases is facilitated by swallowing air and eating foods that contain a large amount of fiber.

Other causes may be:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome;
  • Lactose intolerance;
  • Ascites (abdominal fluid);
  • Gallstones;
  • Weight gain;
  • Ovarian cyst.

If the cause of abdominal swelling is the accumulation of gas, self-treatment is possible (avoid fiber foods for a while, wait for the stomach to act, rest), although sometimes this symptom is a manifestation of a much more serious pathology, therefore, a doctor's consultation is necessary.

Be sure to consult a doctor if the belly continues to grow in size or if you also notice other symptoms (swelling, fever, nausea). Consult a doctor if you have severe diarrhea or see blood in your stool.
