What is hyperandrogenism?

Hyperandrogenism is a diagnosis that implies that the level of the hormone androgen in a woman's body is excessive.

In the female body, androgen hormones are produced in fat cells and ovaries, as well as in the adrenal glands.

In a large percentage of clinical cases, women with hyperandrogenism have polycystic ovary syndrome.

Other possible causes include:

  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia;
  • Cushing's disease;
  • Ovarian tumor;
  • Adrenal gland tumor.
