What is hyperandrogenism?
Hyperandrogenism is a diagnosis that implies that the level of the hormone androgen in a woman's body is excessive.
Androgen is an important hormone and is necessary for:
- for the reproductive system;
- for the heart;
- for bone;
- for muscles;
- for the brain;
- for libido;
- for fat cells;
- for body hair growth.
In the female body, androgen hormones are produced in fat cells and ovaries, as well as in the adrenal glands.
When the level of androgen in a woman's body is higher than recommended, the following symptoms appear:
- Hair growth in places such as face, chest, back;
- Acne;
- Cessation of the menstrual cycle;
- Baldness;
- Oily Skin;
- Virilization (manifestation of male characteristics).
In a large percentage of clinical cases, women with hyperandrogenism have polycystic ovary syndrome.
Other possible causes include:
- Congenital adrenal hyperplasia;
- Cushing's disease;
- Ovarian tumor;
- Adrenal gland tumor.
