Pain in the sternum

What causes breastbone pain?

The cause of breast bone pain may be joint strain, muscle trauma or acid reflux - this discomfort appears as a result of a number of pathologies. Statistically, the cause of breastbone pain is rarely the heart or the breastbone itself.

The most common causes of breast bone pain are:

  • Costochondritis (corresponding symptoms are attached);
  • Musculoskeletal diseases;
  • Acid reflux;
  • Respiratory diseases (corresponding symptoms are attached);
  • Anxiety and panic attacks.

See your doctor immediately if you notice signs or symptoms of a heart attack that causes sharp, constant pain and slows down the pace of your daily life.

You should also consult a doctor for these symptoms:

  • Breastbone or chest pain that you cannot relate to;
  • Sweating;
  • Dizziness or nausea without a specific reason;
  • Breathing problem;
  • Pain that spreads from the chest to the upper part of the body;
  • A feeling of tightness in the chest.

Remember, any symptom that doesn't improve in a few days is of concern and a specialist should be consulted
