Lip swelling

Lip swelling

Swollen lips - causes.

The cause of lip swelling is an inflammatory process or accumulation of fluid under the skin of the lip. Swollen lips can be a symptom of both a mild skin disease and an acute allergic reaction. Swelling of the lip is often formed as a result of an injury to the face.

Causes of facial damage are:

  • Wound;
  • Bite;
  • Burns;
  • Trauma caused by a blunt object;
  • Reopening of the yard and more.

Depending on the type of injury, along with swelling of the lip, it is quite expected to notice such signs as: bleeding, scratch, bruise.

Treatment for lip swelling caused by trauma depends on the underlying cause; For example, in the case of a light injury, it is quite enough to apply ice wrapped in a cloth or a cold pad, however, in case of a deep cut and severe bleeding, the patient should be immediately admitted to the clinic and provided with appropriate emergency medical care.

Swollen lips can be caused by an allergic reaction, and in some clinical cases, this symptom is a sign of a life-threatening condition such as anaphylaxis (also known as anaphylactic shock). During an acute allergic reaction, the patient needs urgent help - every minute is crucial.

Other symptoms of anaphylaxis include:

  • Low pressure;
  • Narrowing of the respiratory tract;
  • Swelling of the tongue and throat;
  • Faint;
  • Weak or rapid pulse.
