What is an ovarian cyst?
An ovarian cyst occurs in or on the surface of the ovary and is filled with fluid.
Ovarian cyst is a common diagnosis - in a large percentage of clinical cases, it is manifested by mild symptoms or does not cause discomfort at all. However, sometimes the cyst bursts and requires urgent medical intervention.
A large ovarian cyst causes the following symptoms:
- Pelvic pain;
- Feeling of fullness, pressure or heaviness in the abdomen;
- Bloating.
Consult a doctor immediately if you have the following symptoms:
- Sudden, sharp pain in the abdomen or pelvis;
- Pain accompanied by fever or vomiting;
- Signs of shock (chill, rapid breathing, weakness, dizziness, sticky skin).
Most ovarian cysts are formed as a result of the menstrual cycle. A cyst of this form is called functional. Functional cysts are usually harmless, rarely cause pain, and usually disappear within 2 or 3 menstrual periods. There are other types of cysts that are not related to menstruation.
The risk of ovarian cyst is high in the following factors:
- Hormonal problems;
- Pregnancy;
- Endometriosis;
- Acute pelvic infection;
- History of cyst.
