What is chalazion?

A chalazion is a swollen red bump on the eyelid.

The eyelid contains tiny oil-producing glands that keep the eyes moist. A chalazion is formed when one of these glands is suppressed.

The pathological process is sometimes called eyelid cyst or chalazion cyst.

Adults between the ages of 30 and 50 are mostly affected - the diagnosis is rare in children.

Along with a bump on the eyelid, you may suffer from the following symptoms:

  • Mild irritation and tearing from the eyes;
  • Blurred vision;
  • A completely swollen eyelid.

Chalazion is not contagious - it is not caused by a bacterial infection, therefore, the bacteria does not spread from person to person.

Risk factors are:

  • You have already suffered from chalazion;
  • Chronic inflammation of the eyelid in the anamnesis;
  • Rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff;
  • Dry skin;
  • Hormonal changes.
