What is apraxia of speech?

Apraxia of speech is a speech disorder in which a person has difficulty moving the mouth properly to pronounce words and sounds.

For correct speech, the brain creates a plan, according to which the speech apparatus and muscles perform the appropriate movement, and as a result we get the correct sounds, words, rhythm. During apraxia, the brain is unable to move the mouth, jaw, tongue, and lips properly. With this type of speech disorder, it is difficult for a person to pronounce sounds and form words.

Symptoms of this condition are usually noticed when the child starts to talk. Apraxia of speech in adults is caused by brain damage or dementia.

The following symptoms are characteristic:

  • Feeding problem in infancy;
  • Compared to other children, he gurgles, gurgles, and gurgles less;
  • Unlike his peers, he cannot learn to speak quickly;
  • Adds or subtracts sounds;
  • Quite scarce dictionary;
  • He speaks much slower than his peers;
