Air in urine - when air bubbles are released during urination

What is pneumaturia?

Pneumaturia is not a diagnosis, but a symptom of some diseases.

This is a condition where there are air bubbles in the urine.

The cause may be a urinary tract infection, a fistula between the bladder and the colon. Very rarely, they are also seen in deep water divers. In some clinical cases, pneumaturia is a sign of Crohn's disease.

You have pneumaturia if you feel that the flow of urine is obstructed by gas or some kind of bubbles. You will also notice that the urine is full of tiny air bubbles.

Along with pneumaturia, the following symptoms are expected to appear:

  • Burning sensation during urination;
  • You have difficulty urinating;
  • You feel as if you need to use the toilet constantly;
  • Urine has changed color.

The course of treatment depends on the underlying cause. For example, when diagnosing a urinary tract infection, antibiotic therapy is provided, and when fistula is diagnosed, laparoscopic surgery is prescribed.
