Fecal incontinence - when a person cannot control the action of the stomach

What is fecal incontinence?

This is a condition when a person cannot control the process of bowel movement and stool leaks out of the rectum at unwanted times.

The course of treatment depends on the underlying cause, but the usual treatment options are dietary changes, drug therapy, or surgery. The diagnosis is more common in women and the elderly.

You have fecal incontinence if:

  • Stool leaks when passing gas;
  • Faeces leak during physical activity;
  • You notice feces on your underwear after normal stomach activity;
  • In fact, you cannot control your stomach.

The cause may be:

  • Frequent diarrhea or constipation;
  • Muscle damage;
  • Old age;
  • Nerve damage;
  • Rectal prolapse;
  • A person arbitrarily, without a doctor's recommendation, takes an excessive dose of laxatives;
  • Nervous system disorder;
  • Inflammatory bowel disease and other pathologies.
