White tongue

White tongue

What is white tongue?

This is a symptom when a white layer appears on the surface of the tongue. You may also have other symptoms, namely: irritation, hairy tongue, bad breath.

It is visually unpleasant to look at and may frighten a person, however, in a large percentage of clinical cases, it is temporary and harmless.

The symptom will go away in a few weeks, but you should definitely consult a doctor if you have pain or complain of problems with eating and talking.

The causes are:

  • You do not properly take care of oral hygiene;
  • Tobacco;
  • You drink more than one alcoholic drink daily;
  • The tongue was damaged by a sharp object;
  • You are taking an antibiotic;
  • There is a shortage of fruits and vegetables in the diet;
  • Dry mouth;
  • You breathe through your mouth.

A white tongue is a symptom of the following pathologies:

  • Geographical language;
  • Leukoplakia;
  • Oral lichen planus;
  • Oral candidal stomatitis;
  • Syphilis.

It usually heals without specific treatment within a few weeks. However, I recommend consulting a doctor if the symptoms do not improve even after a few weeks. Treatment depends on the symptoms and underlying cause.
