What is apathy?

During apathy, sensations, feelings or emotions disappear.

It is a mental disorder characterized by an indifferent attitude towards life events and close people.

Indifference affects and leaves a negative mark on motivation, you may even feel as if you have lost sight of the world.

During apathy, a person:

  • Loses interest in favorite activities, does not complete daily tasks;
  • Loses interest in personal relationships;
  • Avoids being with others;
  • He notices changes in mood and has decreased emotion.

If apathy is temporary, it is formed against the background of stress, but the chronic form is much more dangerous, because it threatens relationships, the rhythm of everyday life, well-being.

In some clinical cases, apathy is a symptom of another disease.

Signs of apathy are:

  • Fatigue;
  • A person is no longer happy with the work, hobby that once gave pleasure;
  • It is difficult for the patient to perform the activities that make up the rhythm of daily life, he can no longer avoid the assigned duties;
  • It is difficult to express feeling, emotion;
  • Loss of interest in social activities and events;
  • Spending a lot of time alone;
  • It is difficult to make a plan and solve a problem.

It is not always possible to determine the cause. It is a symptom of a number of neurological and psychiatric diseases. According to scientists, apathy may be formed due to dysfunction in a specific area of the brain.

Apathy may include the following disorders:

  • Alzheimer's disease;
  • Depression;
  • Schizophrenia;
  • Huntington's disease;
  • Parkinson's disease;
  • Stroke
  • Vascular dementia.
