Symptoms and causes.
Fluid retention occurs when some part of the body becomes swollen due to accumulated fluid. In a large percentage of clinical cases, it appears in the leg area.
The following symptoms are characteristic:
- Subcutaneous edema;
- The skin acquires a glossy appearance and feels tight to the touch;
- The skin loses its normal color;
- Pain in the limbs;
- Weight gain;
- The affected area increases in size.
During fluid retention, the patient experiences pain in the swollen area. You may also have difficulty moving.
If fluid retention has formed in the lung, the patient suffers from chest pain and shortness of breath.

Fluid retention may be formed due to a number of diseases, in particular, these pathologies are:
- Heart failure or cardiomyopathy;
- Chronic lung disease;
- Thyroid gland problems;
- Nutritional deficiency;
- Kidney failure;
- Cirrhosis;
- Deep vein thrombosis;
- Accumulation of fat in the leg area;
- Lymphatic system problems;
- Burn or other type of trauma;
- Some medications (some kind of side effect).
The risk of fluid retention is high if a person is overweight or obese.
Sometimes it appears in the body of pregnant women.
