What are the symptoms of lactose intolerance?
During lactose intolerance, the body is unable to fully digest milk sugar, i.e. lactose. The reason for this is that the small intestine produces too few enzymes. When the small intestine lacks sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase, milk sugar cannot be adequately digested.
Symptoms of lactose intolerance are:
- Bloating;
- Gases;
- Nausea and vomiting;
- Stomach pain and spasm;
- Diarrhea;
- Abdominal rumbling.
Symptoms may appear 1 or 2 days after lactose ingestion.
Almost all dairy products contain lactose. The percentage varies, for example, fresh milk and cream have a large amount of lactose, while hard cheese has much less.
Note that lactose is often added as an ingredient in processed foods, and sometimes even in medicine. Salad dressings and snacks may contain lactose.
If your body is too sensitive to lactose, you will have a reaction to even a very small dose. In order to avoid symptoms and any possible complications, check whether the product contains milk sugar.
