What is bacteremia?

Bacteremia means that there is bacteria in the bloodstream - often asymptomatic.

In a large percentage of clinical cases, the body manages to defeat it, however, if the immune system cannot cope with the disease, serious complications, such as sepsis, develop. In society, the pathology is also called blood poisoning, although this is not a medical term.

Bacteremia is caused by different types of bacteria and may develop for the following reasons:

  • Dental procedure (teeth cleaning, tooth extraction);
  • Surgical procedure;
  • Infection;
  • Medical equipment;
  • Severe burns or trauma/damage.

If bacteremia turns into a blood infection, the patient will suffer from the following symptoms:

  • Fever;
  • Trembling;
  • Cooling down.

The risk group of sepsis (complicated clinical case of bacteremia) includes:

  • Children under 1 year old;
  • Persons over 65 years old;
  • People with weak immunity;
  • History of diabetes, kidney disease, cancer;
  • If you were ill for some reason or were being treated in a clinic.
