Laryngospasm - if you have difficulty breathing and speaking due to spasm

What is laryngospasm?

Laryngospasm is a condition in which the vocal cords suddenly spasm (involuntary constriction). As a result, the airways are temporarily blocked, therefore, it is difficult for a person to breathe or speak.

It is a rare occurrence and usually an attack lasts less than 60 seconds.

Depending on the symptoms, laryngospasm is unpleasant, although it usually does not cause serious problems or complications.

People with laryngospasm describe the attack as a tight, choking sensation.

In some clinical cases, the underlying cause is unknown. In some clinical cases, it is a symptom of the following diseases or conditions:

  • Asthma;
  • Chronic acid reflux;
  • Stress or anxiety disorder, disorder;
  • Laryngospasm related to sleep;
  • Anesthesia;
  • Laryngeal hypersensitivity.

Since laryngospasm occurs without any warning conditions and completely suddenly, it is almost impossible to take preventive measures. However, if you have had symptoms characteristic of this condition at least once, it is recommended to consult a doctor - the doctor will be able to determine the underlying cause, therefore, find a method to reduce the risk.
