Mononucleosis - the kissing disease

Mononucleosis - the kissing disease

What is mononucleosis?

Infectious mononucleosis (mono) is often called the kissing disease. The virus is spread through saliva.

The risk group of mononucleosis includes teenagers and young adults - the diagnosis is common in this age group.

Due to mild symptoms, in some clinical cases, the patient may transmit the virus without an official diagnosis (not diagnosed). For recovery, it is necessary for the patient to rest and drink enough fluids. In case of mononucleosis, attention is needed, because in untreated cases, the risk of a number of complications, for example, enlargement of the spleen, increases.

Signs and symptoms of mononucleosis may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Pharyngitis
  • Swollen lymph nodes in your neck and armpits
  • Swollen tonsils
  • Headache
  • Skin rash
  • Soft, swollen spleen

As I have already told you, mononucleosis spreads through saliva, therefore, in order to prevent the spread of infection, it is recommended to observe personal hygiene, wash your hands regularly and do not kiss the people around you, do not use common utensils, food.
