What does leg spasm mean?
This is a painful condition when a muscle contracts involuntarily.
The discomfort lasts for a few seconds or minutes.
Leg spasms interfere with restful sleep, exercise regimen, and quality of life. Sometimes the cause of the spasm is some disease or medication (some kind of side effect).
It is mostly harmless, but it causes pain and discomfort.
The risk of developing leg spasms increases as a person ages, as the tendon naturally shortens with age.
Statistically, leg spasms are more common in women.
An episode of spasm often occurs at night.
Discomfort can be alleviated by certain methods, namely:
- Try stretching the contracted muscle;
- Massage your leg, move your limb and try to take a step;
- Take a warm bath;
- Put a cold or warm cloth (whichever you like better).
Unfortunately, there is no medication or injection that can cure leg cramps right away.
