Hormone prolactin - what function does it perform in the body?

What is prolactin?

Prolactin is a hormone responsible for the formation of appropriate breast tissue during lactation and the process of milk production.

Prolactin is secreted from the pituitary gland. This hormone can be produced by the central nervous system, immunity, uterus and mammary gland.

When the level of prolactin in the blood is excessive, the following symptoms appear:

  •  Infertility;
  •  A person loses interest, desire for sexual intercourse;
  •  When a woman is not pregnant and, therefore, is not breastfeeding her baby, she still has discharge from her breast;
  •  Irregular menstruation;
  •  Pain or discomfort during intercourse;
  •  Erectile dysfunction;
  •  Low level of testosterone;
  •  Breast growth in men.

Normally, prolactin levels increase during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

In other cases, the causes are:

  •  Physical stress, pain;
  •  Exercise;
  •  Trauma in the chest area;
  •  Epileptic attack;
  •  Pressure on the chest and others.
