Cholestasis of pregnant women - diagnostic methods

Cholestasis of pregnancy is a liver condition that may develop late in pregnancy.

Against the background of the diagnosis, the woman suffers from severe itching (mainly on the hands and feet), although she does not have a rash.

The itching worsens at night and the discomfort is so annoying that it is difficult for a pregnant woman to sleep peacefully.

Discomfort characteristic of cholestasis in pregnant women disappears in a few days after childbirth.

Provided for diagnosis:

  •  Obstetrician-gynecologist will study symptoms, medical history;
  •  The doctor will conduct a physical examination;
  •  A blood test will be prescribed to check the liver's health condition and functioning ability;
  •  Laboratory analysis will check the amount/indicator of bile acid salts in the blood.

The main goal of the course of treatment for cholestasis of pregnancy is to reduce itching and prevent any possible complications.

This diagnosis is a potential cause of pregnancy complications, therefore, the fetus will also be monitored.
