About the research

As you know, the thyroid gland produces hormones that control metabolism. Various types of proteins are produced by the thyroid gland, including thyroglobulin.

What is thyroglobulin?

Thyroglobulin is an essential protein.

The thyroid gland uses this protein to properly activate thyroid hormones and make it function properly.

When a person has an autoimmune disease, the process of thyroglobulin production in the body is disrupted.

Autoimmune disease means that the immune system mistakenly attacks its own antibodies, destroying healthy cells. In the clinical case, when the immune system hurts the thyroid gland, it is primarily the thyroglobulin that is damaged. The end result of an abnormal chain reaction is the formation of antithyroglobulin antibodies.

The determination of anti-thyroglobulin antibodies in the blood is prescribed precisely to check the level of antibodies in the circulatory system. According to the answer of the analysis, if the level is high it means that the person has an autoimmune condition.

What is the purpose of the study?

The test is prescribed for symptoms of thyroid disorders, for example, these signs are:

Fatigue;
Weight loss for no reason;
Dry skin;
Constipation.

Determination of thyroglobulin antibodies may be necessary in clinical cases where goiter or an autoimmune disorder have been diagnosed (e.g., Graves' disease, postpartum thyroiditis, neonatal hypothyroidism, or Hashimoto's thyroiditis).

The test may also be prescribed to monitor thyroid dysfunction.
