Peripheral neuropathy, a result of damage to the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord (peripheral nerves).
It often causes weakness, numbness and pain, usually in your hands and feet. It can also affect other areas of your body.
Peripheral neuropathy can result from traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic problems, inherited causes and exposure to toxins.
One of the most common causes is diabetes.
The signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy are varied and the symptoms depend on which nerve is damaged.
Your doctor may order tests, including:
- Blood tests.
- Imaging tests. CT or MRI scans can look for herniated disks, tumors or other abnormalities.
- Electromyography
- Nerve biopsy.
- Skin biopsy.
An appropriate course of treatment is prescribed after diagnosing the underlying cause. Relief of discomfort caused by peripheral neuropathy can be achieved with medication therapy. Physiotherapy is recommended in case of muscle weakness.
In clinical cases where neuropathy has developed under pressure on a nerve, surgery is required.
