How is a broken toe treated?

A broken toe is a common injury.

It is most frequently caused by dropping something on your foot or stubbing your toe.

To heal, a broken bone must be immobilized so that its ends can knit back together.

Your doctor may also prescribe over-the-counter medications. In some cases, surgery is also needed.

Most broken toes heal well, usually within four to six weeks.

Symptoms of a broken toe include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration

Complications

Complications may include:

  • Infection.
  • Osteoarthritis.

Self-medication is not allowed, especially if the fracture is due to trauma!

Be sure to see a doctor if the pain and the swelling persists even after a few days, and discoloration of the toe has changed.

See your doctor right away if you find it difficult to move normally due to injury or if you are unable to wear shoes due to pain.
