Boil - Why does a boil appear?

What is a boil (boil)?

A boil (also called a furuncle) is a skin infection that occurs due to Staphylococcus aureus, although it can also be caused by other types of bacteria and fungi.

In mild clinical cases, a boil heals on its own, bursts, and the pus is drained. However, sometimes a doctor's intervention is required, namely, an incision is made in the skin to drain the pus.

A boil forms as a red bump, then increases in size and fills with pus. A boil forms over several hours to days. At the initial stage, you experience pain, swelling, and notice a red bump, and the skin is warm to the touch.

When a boil forms, the following signs are already evident:

  • Pain;
  • Pus;
  • Increases in size;
  • Yellow or white discoloration in the center;
  • May spread to other areas of the body;
  • Pus around the boil.

Risk factors include:

  • Close contact with someone who has a staph infection;
  • Being overweight;
  • Eczema;
  • Having a weak immune system, cancer, or diabetes.
