Foamy urine - diagnosis and treatment methods

Foamy urine - diagnosis and treatment methods

When should you see a doctor?

Foamy urine is not always a sign of illness and can sometimes be caused by toilet cleaners, dehydration, or rapid urination (for example, if your bladder is full, it empties quickly and a strong stream produces foam).

You should definitely see a doctor if foamy urine is accompanied by other symptoms:

  • This symptom does not go away, that is, you have been noticing foam in your urine for several days;
  • Swelling;
  • Nausea;
  • Vomiting;
  • Loss of appetite;
  • Fatigue;
  • Blood in the urine;
  • Cloudy urine.

Diagnosis

First of all, it is necessary to perform a urinalysis and determine the amount of protein, for example, whether it is excessive. In case of a high protein content in the urine, an additional analysis will be performed - this diagnosis must be confirmed after 24 hours.

Another test that will be ordered is an assessment of the albumin-creatinine ratio. If this study shows an excess, the doctor will suspect kidney disease. To finalize the diagnosis, a kidney ultrasound is prescribed - with this computer test, the doctor will assess the structure and general condition of the organ.

Treatment

The course of treatment is individual and depends on the cause.

If the patient is dehydrated, water, clean fluids will be prescribed. Water should be drunk gradually and in such a dose that the urine becomes clear yellow.

If the cause is diabetes, oral medications or insulin injections will be necessary. In addition, if there is a history of diabetes, a person should regularly monitor their blood sugar levels.

If kidney disease is diagnosed at an early stage, medication and lifestyle changes will be effective. In case of acute kidney disease, dialysis is necessary.
