What is atherectomy?
Atherectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that aims to remove plaque and widen narrowed or blocked arteries. This procedure restores normal blood flow and reduces symptoms of peripheral arterial disease.
The following types of tests are prescribed for diagnosis:
• Angiography;
• Ultrasound of the blood vessels.
Atherectomy is performed under anesthesia, so the patient does not feel anything.
Since it is a minimally invasive procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision to access the arteries - an atherectomy is performed within 2 hours. Most patients return to their normal routine within a few days of the procedure.
Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms after atherectomy:
• A painful area in the groin or leg;
• Swelling;
• Redness or warmth;
• Coldness or numbness in the treated leg.
