How is jaw pain treated?

Jaw pain is a common complaint.

Statistically, this symptom affects millions of people in the United States alone. Jaw pain can be mild or severe enough to disrupt your daily routine and reduce your quality of life.

Jaw pain can be caused by a number of factors, such as teeth grinding, toothache, gum disease, or serious conditions such as a jaw fracture or heart attack.

The course of treatment is individual and depends on the cause, for example, in the case of a jaw fracture, surgery is necessary. If the cause is an abscessed tooth or gum disease, dental treatment is required.

In case of temporomandibular joint dysfunction, the following are recommended:

  • Eating soft foods;
  • Applying a hot compress (commonly known as a cold compress) or ice wrapped in a cloth to the jaw;
  • Explain your complaint to the pharmacy and they will prescribe you appropriate nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

In case of temporomandibular joint dysfunction, the doctor will prescribe a muscle relaxant and, if you grind your teeth, a special medical mouthguard.
