If you have a headache when you lie down

A headache that worsens when a person lies down in bed.

This type of headache can be caused by a number of conditions, such as changes in cerebrospinal fluid pressure, a brain tumor, nasal congestion, and more.

High blood pressure may be the cause. Risk factors include obesity, chronic hypertension, and gender (male).

In some clinical cases, the cause is hypnic headache. People experience this type of discomfort while sleeping, at the same time and almost every night. Scientists do not know the specific contributing cause, although according to statistics, hypnic headaches are much more common in people over 50 years old.

The cause may be cervicogenic headaches, which begin in the neck and spread to the head. Often, cervicogenic headaches are triggered by specific neck movements or postures. Risk factors to consider include: middle age, a history of neck trauma or osteoarthritis, and poor posture when sitting or standing.

Sometimes the cause is a stuffy nose caused by allergies, the flu, or a cold.

Be sure to see a doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Sudden, severe headache;
  • Fever, stiff neck, confusion, seizures;
  • Headaches that start after a head injury.
