What Causes Jaw Pain?
Jaw pain is a common complaint that affects millions of people. It can be mild or severe enough to significantly impair a person’s quality of life.
- Jaw pain can be caused by:
- Aching in the temporomandibular joint;
- A throbbing/pulsating pain in the jaw;
- Intense jaw pain after an injury;
- Pain that radiates from the chest or shoulder to the jaw.
Sometimes jaw pain resolves without specific treatment. However, you should definitely see a doctor if your symptoms last more than a week.
In some clinical cases, jaw pain is an emergency and you should call an ambulance if you experience the following symptoms:
- You think you have broken or dislocated your jaw;
- Pain radiates from your chest to your jaw.

Other possible causes include:
- Tooth abscess;
- Arthritis;
- Teeth grinding;
- Gum disease;
- Bacterial infection;
- Trauma;
- Mumps;
