Neurosyphilis - a complication of syphilis that causes serious neurological problems

What is neurosyphilis?

Neurosyphilis is a complication of syphilis. It can cause serious neurological problems, for example, it can cause stroke and paralysis.

There are different forms of neurosyphilis (with corresponding symptoms) known to medicine; it can be expected to manifest itself at any stage of syphilis.

Urgent treatment is necessary.

Neurosyphilis can develop in any person who has syphilis infection. You are at risk of syphilis if you have unprotected intimate contact with a person carrying the infection - the disease is contagious and the route of transmission is vaginal, anal or oral sex.

Syphilis is the most common sexually transmitted infection - according to statistics, 133,000 official clinical cases were recorded in the United States in 2020 alone.

Appropriate antibiotic therapy is provided for treatment. After completing the course of treatment, blood tests are ordered to confirm that the infection has not damaged (penetrated) the central nervous system and that the pathology has truly resolved.
