Paraneoplastic syndrome - a chain of symptoms that appear against the background of cancer

What is paraneoplastic syndrome?

Paraneoplastic syndrome is a rare condition that develops with a malignant tumor.

Sometimes a tumor produces a substance that causes the body's systems and organs to function abnormally. The immune system tries to destroy the tumor, but in the process of this fight it inadvertently damages healthy tissues. It is against the background of this damage that the symptoms characteristic of paraneoplastic syndrome appear.

Often, the symptoms of paraneoplastic syndrome are the first sign of cancer. Statistically, 8-20% of patients with cancer develop paraneoplastic syndrome.

The following types of cancer are most often associated with paraneoplastic syndrome:

• Breast cancer;
• Stomach cancer;
• Leukemia;
• Lymphoma;
• Lung cancer;
• Pancreatic cancer;
• Kidney cancer;
• Prostate cancer;
• Testicular cancer;
• Ovarian cancer.

The following symptoms are characteristic of paraneoplastic syndrome:

• Fever;
• Fatigue and weight loss;
• Night sweats.
