What causes weakness in the limbs?

The cause of weakness in the legs can be excessive physical exertion/strain or a health problem.

You should immediately go to the clinic or call emergency services if you suddenly develop weakness in the legs or other parts of the body - this symptom is often a sign of a stroke or other life-threatening illness.

You should make an appointment with a doctor if you constantly complain of severe pain or if your leg weakness worsens.

There are many conditions or diseases that cause weakness in the legs. You may experience weakness in one or both legs.

Possible causes include:

• Delayed onset muscle soreness, that is, muscle soreness that occurs hours after physical activity and reaches its peak within 1-3 days;
• Herniated disc;
• Spinal compression;
• Peripheral neuropathy;
• Guillain-Barré syndrome;
• Myasthenia Gravis;
• Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis;
• Stroke.
