What is hyperreflexia?
Hyperreflexia means that the muscle has an overactive reflex reaction. This can be caused by neurological conditions or anxiety and hyperthyroidism.
A reflex is an involuntary (automatic) reaction to a stimulus, an irritant, and is necessary for the body to avoid any danger, for example, do you wave your hand when you see a bee?
To diagnose, the doctor will place a special medical, diagnostic hammer on your knee and find out how adequate the reflex reaction is in the body.
Possible causes include:
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis;
- Brain infection;
- Multiple sclerosis;
- Parkinson's disease;
- Spinal cord injury;
- Traumatic brain injury;
- Vitamin B12 deficiency.
Hyperreflexia is also caused by:
- Anxiety disorder;
- Severe stress;
- Increased thyroid activity.
The goal of the treatment course is to manage the underlying pathology, that is, the symptom will also resolve when the cause is treated.
