Hyporeflexia - when the body has reduced reflexes

What is hyporeflexia?

Hyporeflexia is a symptom that means that the skeletal muscles have reduced reflex response.

The diagnosis is made by damage to any part of the reflex arc. A reflex is an involuntary movement of the body in response to an irritant.

The doctor will suspect hyporeflexia by striking the knee with a reflex hammer (a diagnostic method that is completely painless and tests the ability to reflex). In a normal state, the peripheral nerve will send a signal to the spinal cord that a certain impact is occurring in the knee area, and in response, the spinal cord will quickly respond, that is, it will call on the muscle to contract. In hyporeflexia, the muscle contracts only once a week or does not contract at all.

The damage can affect any tissue, for example:

• Sensory nerve fiber;
• Sensory nerve cell or neurons;
• Spinal cord;
• Motor nerve cells or neurons;
• Motor fiber.

In rare clinical cases, the cause of hyporeflexia is a neurological disease that damages the junction between the nerve and the muscle.

The course of treatment for hyporeflexia is individual and depends on the cause. The goal of the treatment course is to cure the cause of this symptom, the disease.
