What is carcinoid syndrome?

Carcinoid syndrome is a complication of neuroendocrine tumors.

Neuroendocrine tumors are rare types of tumors that develop in neuroendocrine cells.

The following symptoms are characteristic:

  • Uncomfortable, unpleasant redness, warmth in the head and neck;
  • Shortness of breath;
  • Frequent diarrhea;
  • Abdominal cramps;
  • Fatty stools with a strong unpleasant odor;
  • Swelling of the extremities;
  • Erectile dysfunction;
  • A person loses the desire for intimate relationships;
  • Jaundice;
  • Dizziness and a feeling of fainting;
  • A feeling that the heart is about to stop beating.

Against the background of carcinoid syndrome, a life-threatening condition known as carcinoid crisis is expected.

Other possible complications include:

  • Carcinoid heart disease;
  • Mesenteric fibrosis;
  • Depression.

The only way to manage carcinoid syndrome is to treat the underlying condition, which is the neuroendocrine tumor.
