What is oligomenorrhea?

Oligomenorrhea is a disordered menstruation, which is characterized by infrequent periods. For example, you have oligomenorrhea if the duration from cycle to cycle is more than 35 days. Instead of having menstruation every month, due to this diagnosis, the cycle comes only 6 to 8 months a year.

In a large percentage of clinical cases, the cause of oligomenorrhea is hormonal imbalance. Sometimes it is caused by excessive (extreme intensity) physical activity or a side effect of some medications. The cycle can also be disturbed against the background of various types of eating disorders.

Statistically, 12 to 15% of women have experienced oligomenorrhea at least once in their lives. In 10 to 20% of cases of infertility, oligomenorrhea is mentioned as one of the factors. It is often associated with polycystic ovary syndrome.

In addition to menstrual problems, oligomenorrhea is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Acne;
  • Headaches;
  • Hot flashes;
  • Abdominal pain;
  • Vaginal discharge;
  • Blurred vision;
  • Unusually excessive facial and body hair.
