Bad or unusual smell in the nose

Some people complain of a bad smell in the nose.

The cause can be related to problems in the sinuses and mouth, the nasal passages.

The following conditions are often the cause of bad smell in the nose:

• Acute and chronic sinusitis;
• Mouth or tooth infection;
• Dry mouth;
• Some medications (side effects);
• Certain foods and drinks;
• Digestive disorders;
• Tobacco;
• Diabetes;
• Liver disease;
• Kidney disease.

In a large percentage of clinical cases, the conditions that cause bad smell in the nose are not life-threatening, however, if the smell is severe or chronic, it naturally decreases the patient's quality of life - against the background of hunger, the risk of developing vitamin and nutrient deficiencies, unwanted weight loss, and other diseases increases.

These foods and drinks often leave a certain smell in the nose:

• Garlic and onions;
• Coffee;
• Alcohol;
• Spiced dishes.

Sometimes the diagnosis is phantosmia. This medical term indicates that the patient perceives a smell that is not actually present in the environment. It is an olfactory hallucination and the person seems to inhale the smell of burning, metal, mold, tobacco, rot, or chemicals.
