Oral Allergy Syndrome

Oral Allergy Syndrome

What is oral allergy syndrome?

Oral allergy syndrome is an allergic reaction to certain foods, such as fruits, vegetables, or nuts.

The diagnosis is likely if you have a history of allergies to plants, grasses, or other pollens.

To avoid a reaction, avoid eating the foods that cause allergic irritation in your body.

The following symptoms are characteristic of oral allergy syndrome:

  • Itching, mild swelling, tingling sensation of the lips, tongue, or throat;
  • Pimple-like bumps on the mouth.

Less common symptoms are:

  • Nausea;
  • Itchy, red, swollen skin;
  • Allergic rash;

Very rarely, difficulty breathing and other severe reactions.

Oral allergy syndrome is caused by fruits, vegetables, and nuts. This food contains a protein that is very similar to the pollen protein, so the body reacts.
