Portal hypertension

Portal hypertension

What is portal hypertension?

Portal hypertension is increased pressure in the portal venous system. The portal vein is the main vein that leads to the liver.

The most common cause of portal hypertension is cirrhosis of the liver.

The following symptoms are characteristic:

  • Bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract;
  • Ascites;
  • Encephalopathy, confusion;
  • Jaundice;
  • Swelling of the extremities;
  • Enlarged veins are noticeable around the navel.

Diagnostic methods include:

  • Computer studies and laboratory blood tests;
  • Pressure measurement;
  • Endoscopic examination.

To reduce the risk of bleeding from esophageal varices, drug therapy is provided to reduce pressure in the portal vein.

If bleeding persists or recurs, surgical manipulation is prescribed.
