Functional Dyspepsia - Persistent Stomach Pain and Bloating

Functional Dyspepsia - Persistent Stomach Pain and Bloating

What is Functional Dyspepsia?

Functional dyspepsia is a form of chronic digestive disorder. This diagnosis is characterized by frequent stomach pain and a feeling of fullness and bloating after eating.

A doctor diagnoses functional dyspepsia when the direct cause of the symptom cannot be determined.

Several treatment methods have been introduced, although one specific course that will be effective for everyone has not yet been developed.

Dyspepsia is more of a syndrome than a condition - it is a set of symptoms. There are two forms:

  • Epigastric pain syndrome - the patient complains of pain and burning in the upper abdomen;
  • Postprandial distress syndrome - the patient suffers from abdominal pain, a feeling of fullness and bloating after eating.

Functional dyspepsia is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Upper abdominal pain;
  • Bloating;
  • Feeling of fullness and hunger;
  • Burning sensation.

Additionally, the following signs may appear:

  • Frequent belching;
  • Nausea;
  • The patient is either unable to hold stool or has delayed gastric emptying;
  • Stress.

Risk factors include:

  • Psychological factors;
  • Family history of nervous disorders or digestive system pathologies;
  • Increased sensitivity to food;
  • History of allergies.
