How to treat a tooth abscess

A tooth abscess is caused by a bacterial infection.

A periapical abscess occurs at the tip of the root, while a periodontal abscess occurs around the root, on the gum.

Risk factors for a tooth abscess include poor oral hygiene, eating too much sugary foods and drinks, and dry mouth.

Prompt intervention is essential, as if the abscess is not drained, the infection can spread to other areas of the jaw, neck, or head, increasing the risk of serious complications. Special attention should be paid to people with weakened immune systems.

For diagnosis, the dentist will order:

• Physical examination - if the root is pus-filled, the patient will definitely feel tender;
• X-rays to identify the abscess and determine if the infection has spread;
• CT scans if the infection has spread to other areas.

The main goal of treatment is to eliminate the infection, and for this purpose, drainage of the pus is prescribed. Sometimes it is impossible to save the damaged tooth and the dentist considers it necessary to extract it.

In some clinical cases (when the infection has spread to nearby teeth), antibiotic therapy is prescribed.
