What Causes Pelvic Pain?

Pelvic pain can be caused by an infection or an underlying medical condition. Treatment is individualized and depends on the underlying cause.

Pelvic pain can be caused by the following conditions:

  • Appendicitis;
  • Sexually transmitted infections;
  • Bladder problems;
  • Kidney infection or kidney stones;
  • Diverticulitis;
  • Colitis;
  • Hernia;
  • Nerve damage;
  • Pelvic fracture;
  • Pelvic muscle spasm or strain;
  • Psychological pain;
  • Bowel problems.

Women most often complain of pelvic pain due to the following factors:

  • Pregnancy;
  • Miscarriage;
  • Ectopic pregnancy;
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease;
  • Menstrual cramps;
  • Ovarian cyst;
  • Endometriosis;
  • Ovarian cancer;
  • Uterine cancer;
  • Uterine fibroids.

In a large percentage of clinical cases, pelvic pain is accompanied by the following symptoms:

  • Vaginal bleeding, spotting, or discharge;
  • Pain during menstruation;
  • Pain during urination;
  • Constipation or diarrhea;
  • Bloating or gas;
  • Rectal bleeding;
  • Pain during intercourse;
  • Hip pain;
  • Pain in the groin area;
  • Fever.

Contact your doctor immediately if pelvic pain occurs suddenly. You should consult a doctor if pelvic pain is so severe that it reduces your quality of life and disrupts your daily routine.
